The Sufferfest Announces Launch of New Sports Science Division Led by World-Renowned Coach Neal Henderson

The Sufferfest is proud to announce the establishment of a new Sports Science Division led by world-renowned coach and sports scientist, Neal Henderson. The new division will leverage Henderson’s experience at the highest levels of endurance sports to bring cutting-edge sports science to athletes of all fitness levels.

”Training apps are only as good as the science behind them,” said David McQuillen, CEO of The Sufferfest. “Neal is recognized as one of the most successful sports scientists in the world. He’s created our workouts and training plans for years and he brought power-profile based training to everyone with our 4DP methodology. Now, with the creation of our Sports Science Division, Neal will continue to revolutionise the services, tools, workouts, and plans that makes Sufferfest subscribers faster, stronger and more capable athletes.”

Henderson, who assumes the role of Chief Science Officer, comes to The Sufferfest with an impressive resume. He founded APEX Coaching in 1999 and has coached athletes to over 50 World Championship titles, the men’s and women’s UCI Hour Records, several Grand Tour stage wins, and a large collection of Olympic and Paralympic medals. He currently coaches some of the fastest athletes in the world—including UCI Individual Time Trial World Champion, Rohan Dennis; Canyon-SRAM cyclist, Kasia Niewiadoma; Lotto-Soudal Pro Adam Hansen, and ITU U23 Triathlon World Champion, Taylor Knibb. He has received multiple Coach of the Year awards from USA Cycling and USA Triathlon, and was named the Doc Counsilman Science Award for use of sports science in coaching by the United States Olympic Committee in 2011.

“I’m thrilled with the opportunity to bring world-class science to athletes at all levels of the sport,” said Henderson. “The new Sports Science Division will allow us revolutionize the training app market, but also training science as a whole by leveraging and analyzing data from millions of Sufferfest workouts.”

Joining Henderson at The Sufferfest Sports Science Division as Senior Physiologist is Boulder, Colorado-based coach Mac Cassin. In addition to his years of experience coaching elite and amateur athletes, Mac has spent the last two years helping to integrate the sports science expertise of APEX Coaching into The Sufferfest app. Cassin brings firsthand knowledge of what it takes to compete at the highest levels of the sport. In 2017, Cassin was crowned the US Elite Points Race National Champion and has competed at Track World Cups, The Pan American Championships and Road World Championships. He is currently racing with the 303 Project Pro Cycling team on the road, while his main focus on the track is the Team Pursuit.

Henderson and Cassin will utilize APEX Coaching & Consulting’s state-of-the-art sport science lab and new indoor cycling & strength studio in Boulder, Colorado to build on the success of 4DP and develop new, innovative training methods for The Sufferfest. Currently under development are features that focus on the optimization of pedaling cadence, as well as the official launch of SUF Coaching: a personal coaching service available exclusively to Sufferfest subscribers.
